HPI Sponsors Short Course Carnage at A1 Racing! The A1 Racing Club was pleased to have once again the complete support of HPI Racing for their very popular Short Course Carnage - but this time the racing took place indoors, for the first time ever!
The purpose-built indoor venue was the perfect location to hold the Short Course Carnage meeting.
With new jumps and a wall of death to be proud off, it looked as if the cars and drivers where in for a testing but fun day!
Short Course Fun for Young and Old
It was good to see at the trackside and booking in the different age groups that shortcourse as a whole has attracted from our youngest driver of 7 to our oldest, at 60+! Drivers attended from all over the country to take part in the fun and excitement.
The atmosphere was great with laughing and joking both in the pits and on the rostrum.
After Round 1, Simon Smith seemed to have full control with his HPI Blitz ESE, but he knew John Brook would soon be chasing him down!
Round 1 - 2WD
1 Simon Smith 19/ 6m16.704
2 John Brook 18/ 6m 4.503
3 Ian Ward 18/ 6m10.909
Round 1 - 4WD
1 Mark Vardy 16/ 5m 5.543
2 Andy Wesson 16/ 5m 7.364
3 Gavin Rogers 15/ 5m 16.947
The racing stayed close, and by round 3 we had got into the 20 lap territory, and John and Simon starting to pull away from the rest of the field, up to 3 laps ahead of the 4WD racers.
With a lot of the guys using this as a practice for the Short Course Nationals, all the drivers had ever changing lines and ways of overtaking, so sometimes a shrewd move in the closing stages of a race could mean the difference in moving up or down in the rankings.
With everything to fight for and the tension building before the last run of finals, we decided to do the raffle. HPI have kindly helped and supported the Short Course Carnage Meeting that A1 Racing Club have been hosting for the last 2 years, with every one going away very happy after the raffle.
The last leg of finals started and fast, close racing was seen from all the drivers, which led to a fantastic finish!
A very well run meeting by the A1 Racing crew as normal, well done guys !

Craig Collinson wins RHR Spring cup with Flux Pro ESC! Last weekend Robinhood Raceway (RHR) held their Spring Cup event and this was the first meeting out with the new Flux Pro ESC.
I had been for a test day with the ESC the week previous where Ben Cosgrove came along to give some valuable help in fine tuning the settings. On the test day the only thing new in my car was the ESC. I couldnt beleive what a difference there was in the speed of my car, it really was insane!!
I had my doubts that an ESC could make such a difference in speed, but on the opening lap my doubts couldnt have been more wrong! Instantly i had more bottom end, more feel, more brakes, more top speed, more everything!! On the first practice run the car was actually way too quick for the track and i thought I would have to switch to a slower motor. This wasn't necessary, though, as this new ESC has so many tuning options that I was able to tone everything down just by making a few small changes to the ESC settings. Unlike with many other ESC's I've tried over the years, you can really tell the difference when you make changes and by the end of the day the brakes, feel, punch and top speed were exactly to my liking. The fact i was able to change settings in a way that suits my driving style proves how versatile this ESC really is.
Race day
I went into the Spring Cup feeling confident in both my car and my electrics. The track was a little more technical than on the test day and due to the sun being out, the sand in the astro really came to the surface throughout the day. Because there was quite a bit of sand on the track the grip levels were much lower than on the test day and my car was struggling slightly with wheel spin when trying to get on the power coming out of corners. The versatility of the ESC really helped in this situation as I was able to tone down the initial punch which really helped stop the car spinning under acceleration. Throughout qualifying , I was racing against two of the best in the world, Neil Cragg and Paul Bradby. This was a really good test of not only my driving but my car and electrics. When you're trying to keep up with the best, fine adjustments can make all the difference. Out of the 4 rounds of qualifying my best two round scores were 1 and 3, which put me 2nd in the A-main, behind Neil and in front of Paul.
Final
In the final, I got off to a good start with Neil in front and Paul chasing hard in 3rd. After a couple of laps Paul made a costly mistake which allowed me some breathing room. Half way through the race Neil made an unusual mistake and i was right on his back door. I pushed hard to keep up and apply the pressure but Neil was starting to edge away slightly but then again made another mistake. I was able to capitalise on his mistake and take up the lead. I held my nerve for the last few laps and crossed the line in 1st, giving me the win on my debut with the new ESC!
I'm looking forward to the National series now and hopefully achieving some great results running HPI's electrics.
ETS Round 4: Poland - Race Report from HB's Andy Moore Round 4 of this years ETS series took place this past weekend in Poznan Poland at one of the countries biggest motor shows, which had previously drawn close to 50,000 visitors.
In practice I started out with my setup from the LRP race 2 weeks ago which felt good right from the off. As the traction built up during the day all I changed was to switch to thinner front oil to help tone down the aggressive feel on the high speed layout.
Qualifying was a bit up and down for me while I was chasing the ever changing traction. Q1 I had a 10th place finish after a mistake at the beginning of the run. Q2 I finished 5th in round with a clean smooth run.
By the end of qualifying I had further improved my TC-XX by shortening the rear camber link and thinning out the diff oil a little, finished up 4th in the final run and one of only 4 drivers making 24 laps, just 1.5 sec off TQ for the round. So with a 4th and 5th counting I would line up 7th on the grid.
Sometimes finals just don't go your own way and these 3 were some of the worst I've ever driven in. In finals 1 and 2 I was taken out whilst driving mid pack and had to be marshaled. In the 3rd final my car was pretty awesome again but unfortunately traction rolled while battling for 5th and I dropped down the order, eventually finishing a disappointing 9th overall.
Now, it's on to the outdoor season and preparations for the Worlds!
BRCA Electric Buggy Nationals Round 1 - Re-defining RTR? First-ever UK electric rallycross buggy Nationals!
May 6th 2012 saw the first meeting recognised officially by the BRCA for Electric RallyCross Buggies. The Truggy section have incorporated the electric buggies and truggies into their Truggy nationals. A strong field represented by some of the best drivers in the world in their respective classes made the trip to Herts Nitro Car Club for a day of what would prove to be excellent racing.
The race format for the electric classes was 1 round of 5 minutes practice followed by 3 rounds of 6 minute round by round qualifiers with your best 2 scores to count. This was followed by Âbump up' 15 minute finals. The track was a combination of mainly dirt with some astroturf jumps and banked concrete sections.
Trophy Buggy Flux, Trophy Truggy Flux and Vorza Flux in Proper Competition
This season the HPI team will be focusing on running the Trophy Buggy, Trophy Truggy and Vorza Flux cars with as close to RTR spec as possible. Early pre-season testing showed encouraging signs of power and speed from the HPI Rage and Scream ESC/Motor combination. We had 3 drivers very new to electric 8th scale and none of them had driven on dirt or at this venue. Talk about jumping in the deep end!
Practice went well for the team. Ben Cosgrove was an encouraging 8th (Trophy Buggy Flux) with Terry Atkinson 11th (Vorza Flux). Dale Knight (Trophy Truggy Flux) also had a solid run in third on the first time he had ever driven the car. We were all happy with the handling and balance of the cars and the RTR electrics were proving as fast as the mega ££ ESC/motor combinations of other people.
Qualifying saw Ben taking a very respectable 6th and 5th positions to make the A final directly in 7th position. Terry had a 9th and an 11th place finish which put him 2nd in the B final (bump up material) which was 12th overall. This was a fantastic result for the RTR buggies against such a high quality field. To top off a fantastic day Dale Knigh put his Trophy Truggy Flux into 2nd place overall for the E-Truggy A Final! We were pretty pleased with that with our RTR vehicles.
Dale was up first in the E Truggy final which was run in with the nitro finals. Dale had a mixed start with some nitro cars wanting to have a closer look at the electronics in his car with their bumpers...a few clean laps later and he was up into second but a long way behind the leader. Dale pushed hard for the remainder of the race but unfortunately a slight error on the jumps broke a steering part. This was still good enough to give Dale his first national podium in 3rd position! Fantastic result!
Terry was next up in the E Buggy B Final. A strong start saw Terry pull away into a comfortable lead for about 8 minutes. Terry was taking it very easy as he had a big lead and was in the bump up positions (top 3). Unfortunately he drove too steady and under jumped causing a required marshall moment which dropped him into a 4 car battle for the top 3 positions. Holding second place with a couple of minutes to go he was Âpushed' off the track in a very dirty move dropping him out of the bump up positions. However the Vorza Blur ESC proved to be very efficient as Terry managed to take advantage of the dumping cars to get up into third and make the A final on the very last lap of the 15 minute final!
Two HPI RTR Electric Kits in the A Final!
This meant we had 2 RTR cars in the National A Final which was an amazing result! Ben lined up in 7th and Terry in 13th. The final started with a damp track and the rain was to get progressively worse throughout the run. Ben had a great start and was fighting with Chris Doughty for 4th place overall. A few passes and counter passes later meant Paul Robinson caught us to make it a 3 way battle. Paul and Ben had a mid air collision and would lose track of 4th place. They resumed the battle for the rest of the final with Paul getting 5th and Ben 6th covered by less than a second after 15 minutes of racing! Terry resumed the battle with his B final nemesis and they had a scruffy affair which saw Terry have a disaster finishing 11th near the back of the field.
Ready To Race!
This was a fantastic result for the team with the RTR cars. We only had 1 breakage all day with Dale breaking the steering in his final. Many spectators were amazed by the power and performance of the RTR vehicles. Many even dubbed them as 'Ready to Race', not Ready to Run! The series moves to Kent in a month's time for round 2 but before then we will be at the Midland Dirt Masters at Coventry 3/4th June. Please come over and check out the cars for yourself.

D1RC Drift Series Round 1 - Colchester MCC, 14 April It's been a long, cold wait but at last it's underway..... the D1RC Drift Series started it's 2012 season with round 1 at Colchester MCC's great island based circuit with another old favourite drift course being used. The sun stayed out and gave both the experienced Pro Class and the newer Club Class drivers a great days drifting, a mix of serious competition and serious fun too.
Whilst my fellow Team HPI driver, Simon, was otherwise busy at the Gadget Shop exhibition, after a morning of setting up and practicing, I found the groove and put in three good scored runs and qualified second in the Pro Class and then battled through to take second place in the finals to last year's Champion, Stu ÂIceman' Sissons, my Hot Bodies Cyclone TC Drift chassis performing faultlessly throughout the day. It was a tiny winning margin that gave Stu the win, a pair of 6/4 runs, but it was very well deserved and I enjoyed making him earn it!
In the Club Class the battles were just as fierce with top honours being taken by Darcy Meadows in his first full season from Mark Rix, another relative newcomer. Indeed, there are many new faces in Club this year though not all are new to drifting but all are glad they took the plunge and competed in D1RC, giving the dusty car parks a rest!
The mix of chassis brands present was varied and the HPI/Hot Bodies cars acquitted themselves well. All cars were running on the HPI slick T-Drift control tyre #4406, a great all rounder, stable in all weather conditions and long lasting, normally that is. However, we got through a few of them over the competition, the combination of the abrasive Colchester tarmac mixed with aggressive settings being enjoyed on the programmable ESCs resulting in at least one Âthrough the carcass' example in the hands of Richard Lincoln Smith - although he was seen to be enjoying himself out there!
The popularity of the budget priced Sprint2 is beginning to experience a second wind this year as a number of owners are Âreversing' their old chassis, a rebuild that puts the motor immediately behind the front axle line which moves the centre of gravity further forwards, a must for drifting these days. Take note HPI, there could be a sudden call for extra spares as this makes for a very reasonably priced but effective drifter!

NO LIMIT RC Display @ SWMEE, BATH & WEST SHOWGROUND This was No Limit's forth year at swmee.co.uk. Fine, dry weather attracted a crowd of 10,000+ to the exhibition over the weekend.
No Limit, together with Uber RC and MMR, put on an exciting display of car jumping and oval racing using HPI Baja 5B's, 5T's and 5SC's, with a continuous stream of spectators watching our display. No Limit's area was at the show entrance so everyone had to go past our bashing area. We also had a static show of HPI Baja 5B SS's and SC's, which created a lot of interest.
There were numerous scale RC demos at the show - trucks & lorries driving around a set up road course complete with working traffic lights and street lighting, scale tanks, boats and planes, also working model boats, train sets and indoor and outdoor flying displays. Full size daleks and various Star War characters were circulating around the show collecting for charity.
If you have anything to do with RC or any type of scale model you will find something interesting to look at or buy from the numerous stands at the show, from spares and accessories to kits and ready-to-use.
It is a fun weekend for all ages and well worth a visit.
Our next event is the Festival of Motorsport at Pembrey Race Circuit in Wales, Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd June 2012.

HB and Ty Tessman Get 2nd at the NEO Race! Ty competed at the Neo '12 race in Telford, UK April 6-10, this race is one of the biggest races of the year, it is likened to an indoor 1/8 offroad worlds, with all of the top drivers in the world in attendance.
Day one of qualifying held the first 3 of 5 rounds of qualifying, Ty had a very good day taking the top qualifying position in round 1, in round 2 Ty qualified 2nd overall and then took TQ in round 3, this gave him overall TQ for Day 1.
Day two of qualifying, we used the last 2 qualifiers to try some setup changes which did not work as well as we had thought they would, Ty ended up qualifying second overall and started on the pole in the B semi.
Ty's semi went very well, he was able to take the win moving him into the final but his semi time put him 2nd on the grid for the 45 minute final.
In the final things went fairly well, in the first 9 minutes Ty managed to get by Jared to take the lead, Ty came into pit at 9 minutes giving the lead back to Jared which he held until his pit stop at 12 minutes. The 2 drivers pulled away from the rest of the field and battled back and forth, but with Jared doing one less pitstop, Ty was unable to regain the lead, and finished 2nd. All in all it was a good performance by Ty.
Jesse Robbers also did well, getting into the A Final and finishing 12th overall.
Watch the full RC Racing TV report, with the Finals, here!
All of Ty's equipment worked extremely well and we want to thank all of his sponsors for their continued support.

LRP Masters report from Andy Moore Once a year the legendary LRP Masters race brings the Worlds top TC drivers to Eppelheim in Germany and this year saw some awesome racing. I always enjoy visiting Germany and it was good to see many of my friends at the race.
4 rounds of practice got underway on Friday afternoon and ran until late, eventually winding up with the last heat at just before 11pm. As the traction takes some time to build up at this race I used my practice runs to test 2 new chassis' we are evaluating for the new TC-XX and also broke in my race tyres so they were in good shape for qualifying on Saturday.
Qualifying was 2 rounds to count from 5 so everyone knew it was going to be tight for the top 10. My car felt good though and after a motor issue in Q1 I was able to finish top 10 in each of the other rounds securing 8th in the Main with a 5th and 7th place counting.
With the track being so tight the finals were always going to be close and there were very few passing places. In A1 I was only able to move up 1 spot while everyone pretty much finished in quali order. A2 I got through the first laps clean and after a couple of incidents up front I picked up 5th a few seconds off the leading pack. Unfortunately A3 was a nightmare, I got caught in a first corner crash and needing a marshal which left me way behind.
So with a 5th and 7th (coincidently the same score as I got in qualifying) I finally finished 6th overall.
The TCX-X drove wonderfully, it's a fantastic evolution of the HB chassis and should do really well in the hands of racers once it's released.
